Historic Windows: Making the Case

The Cape Cod Commission co-sponsored the Historic Windows: Making the Case Program workshop with Preservation Massachusetts. The workshop was held November 15, 2018 at the Barnstable County Campus.

Introduction to Preservation Restrictions

Preservation restrictions are an important tool for municipalities, especially in communities that use Community Preservation Act funds. This workshop, held May 11, 2018 at the Chatham Town Hall Annex, covered the development and monitoring of preservation restrictions held at the local level, with case-study examples from towns using restrictions and holding and enforcing preservation restrictions.

Caring for Municipal, Museum, and other Non-Profit Historic Properties

This workshop provided information from preservation professionals who manage historic sites about funding mechanisms, building regulations that affect historic properties, condition assessments, cyclical maintenance, disaster preparedness, and working with contractors. It was held May 25, 2018 at Sandwich Town Hall. 

Design Review Concepts, Cases, and Issues

This workshop, held June 1, 2018 at Barnstable Town Hall, explored issues in design review and management of local historic districts, using case-study examples and mock hearings to show how to address challenging issues in historic districts.

Historic Structures in Flood Hazard Areas

This workshop, presented March 29, 2018, focused on issues surrounding flood hazards and historic structures on Cape Cod. It was intended for Building Officials, Community Rating System (CRS) Coordinators, Town Planners, Coastal Resource Managers, Historical Commission members, Realtors and others interested in better understanding flood regulations, FEMA exemptions for historic structures, and how other coastal communities are addressing threats to historic buildings and neighborhoods in flood hazard areas.

Historic Preservation With Or Without A Local Historic District

The Cape Cod Commission and Brewster Historical Commission hosted a presentation and discussion of historic preservation tools May 23, 2017 at the Brewster Ladies' Library. Chris Skelly, Director Of Local Government Programs, Massachusetts Historical Commission, spoke on Historic Preservation With Or Without A Local Historic District. A second presentation, Recent Preservation Efforts On Cape Cod, was made by Sarah Korjeff, Preservation Specialist at the Cape Cod Commission.

Administering A Demolition Delay Bylaw

The Cape Cod Commission sponsored a workshop on “Administering a Demolition Delay Bylaw" on January 30, 2015. Chris Skelly from the Massachusetts Historical Commission presented the workshop, which was designed for communities already administering a demolition delay bylaw. Participants in the workshop discussed the strengths and challenges of demolition delay bylaws, how best to effectively utilize the delay period, and the necessary sections of a well-crafted bylaw. They also covered best practices and success stories from around the state. A video recording of the workshop is available on YouTube.
