Overview

Vision Zero is an effort to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries on Cape Cod's roadways. The Cape Cod Vision Zero Action Plan, a pathway to a safer future, includes a systematic crash analysis and set of solutions to tackle the root causes of all crashes, emphasizing those involving bicyclists, pedestrians, and other non-motorists. The Cape Cod Commission developed the Vision Zero Action Plan for Cape Cod through the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program, an initiative designed to improve road safety and address traffic fatalities nationwide.

The Vision Zero Action Plan was endorsed by the Cape Cod MPO on June 16, 2025. This comprehensive safety document was prepared in coordination with guidance from various stakeholders including the Cape Cod MPO, Cape Cod Joint Transportation Committee, the Vision Zero Advisory Committee, municipal staff from the 15 towns, and the general public. The completion of the Action Plan now allows for opportunities to support implementation of the extensive list of short-term and long-term safety countermeasures and strategies. The Cape Cod Commission will continue to monitor and update progress of safety in the region while supporting each of the 15 towns towards implementation.

The SS4A program is funded by the U.S. DOT under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law / Infrastructure Investment Jobs Act (BIL/IIJA) to subsidize regional initiatives through grants to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries. Vision Zero is a vision to eliminate roadway fatalities and serious injuries on the nation's roadways. The Vision Zero Action Plan will benefit all 15 towns on Cape Cod.
