Canal Bridges Task Force
The Bourne and Sagamore Bridges are instantly recognizable landmarks that serve as both a symbolic and a literal gateway to Cape Cod. However, the continued degradation of these 88-year-old, functionally obsolete structures also represents a significant threat to the long-term viability of the region. Our federal and state delegation and agencies are making marked progress in identifying, developing, and funding sustainable solutions, and deliberate action from our communities is needed now.
In recognition of the importance of safe and reliable canal crossings for the region, the Cape Cod Commission, the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, and the Association to Preserve Cape Cod have partnered to establish the Canal Bridges Task Force.
Task Force Statement of Purpose
The purpose of the Task Force is to support and advocate for the expedient replacement of the Bourne and Sagamore bridges in a manner that is in the best long-term interest of the region and its people.
The Task Force will:
- Advocate for the expedient replacement of the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges,
- Advocate for full funding from federal and state sources,
- Support decisions that are in the best interest of Cape Cod, that respect the environmental sensitivity of the region, and that promote sustainable long-term economic prosperity,
- Support the Town of Bourne to ensure the project supports community connectivity and vitality,
- Be a source of reliable, objective data and analysis, and
