OneCape Summit Celebrates 208 Successes, Gathers Local Leaders and Regulators

The Commission’s OneCape summit, held on February 25th and 26th at the Cape Cod Resort and Conference Center at Hyannis successfully brought together selectmen, managers, and representatives from all 15 towns, state and federal regulators, and stakeholders who have followed the 208 Plan Update process from the beginning.

Executive Director Paul Niedzwiecki gave an update on the outcomes of the 208 Plan Update so far, and outlined the next steps in the 208 process.

Representatives from Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), and the Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) spoke about their roles in the process, the need for water quality improvement on the Cape, and answered questions about the lawsuit between CLF and the EPA. In the opening evening session, elected town leaders had an opportunity to talk ask questions of representatives from US EPA, MassDEP, CLF and the Commission. It was the first time such a forum was organized.

Stakeholders attended breakout sessions covering waste management agencies, watershed teams, monitoring, non-nitrogen issues, and cost. They also heard from panelists who discussed the cost of doing nothing, and the impacts that nitrogen-impaired water has on industries all across Cape Cod.
