Help Shape Eastham’s Climate Future: Public Engagement Opportunities Announced

Together, we can ensure a resilient and sustainable future for Eastham

Eastham community members are encouraged to help shape a resilient future by participating in the Eastham Climate Action Plan.

With roughly 29 miles of coastline, Eastham is vulnerable to coastal flooding, erosion, and other climate-related impacts intensified by rising sea levels and storms. Twenty percent of Eastham’s properties are located within the Special Flood Hazard Area, indicating a heightened risk of flooding during storm events.

In response, the Town has partnered with the Cape Cod Commission to develop a municipal climate action plan that will guide local strategies, investments, and priorities. This plan aims to create a realistic, cost-effective roadmap aligned with broader climate frameworks while emphasizing equity and protecting residential areas, infrastructure, ecosystems, and the local economy.

A resilient and sustainable community means fewer people in harm’s way and reduced damage to clean up following a storm or a flood. This decreases the demands on emergency responders, lowers the risks they face, and reduces the associated costs.  Preserving coastal resources and enhancing resilience to climate change impacts can safeguard property values, support tourism and recreation industries, and attract investment in resilient infrastructure projects.

Community participation is essential to the success of this planning process. Public workshops and a series of pop-up events will offer opportunities for members of the Eastham community to contribute to a local strategy focused on climate adaptation, mitigation, and resiliency. Ultimately, the Eastham Climate Action Plan will create a comprehensive roadmap for addressing climate change at the local level, guiding future decision-making and prioritization.

Join us for a community workshop on July 29, 2025 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at the Eastham Public Library, 190 Samoset Road, Eastham. The evening will include a brief presentation about the project, followed by a facilitated group conversation. Discussion topics will include considerations needed in energy, buildings and development, natural resources, transportation, emergency preparedness, and continued education and collaboration.

Visit a pop-up table hosted by the Cape Cod Commission to learn about the project and to share your thoughts about climate impacts, resiliency, and mitigation in Eastham. We are eager to hear your perspective on the town's opportunities, challenges, and priorities.
