Advancing Roadway Improvements Across the Region 

Communities across Cape Cod continue to advance a wide range of roadway, safety, and multimodal improvements.  The following project updates summarize current construction activity, recently completed milestones, and upcoming work for major state and local transportation projects that are funded through the region’s Transportation Improvement Program. 

Route 6 Scenic Highway Median Installation (Bourne) 
Construction Cost: $30,015,932 | Project Start Date: August 2025

This project includes installation of a new center median, expanded roadway shoulders, drainage improvements and a new shared-use path along the Scenic Highway between Nightingale Road and Edgehill Road. The contractor has begun initial work, which currently includes tree clearing. 

Route 151 Improvements, Phase 2 (Mashpee) 
Construction Cost: $23,141,515 | Project Start Date: October 2024

This project includes roadway reconstruction and construction of a shared-use path and sidewalks along Route 151 from the Falmouth town line to Old Barnstable Road. Current work includes drainage installation, box widening for the shared-use path, and identification of gas main relocation areas. Verizon is also installing new utility poles. 

Route 6 at Main Street Intersection Improvements (Wellfleet)
Construction Cost: $14,390,934 | Project Start Date: October 2023 

This intersection improvement project includes new traffic signal equipment, pavement reconstruction, drainage improvements, and installation of bike lanes and sidewalks at the Route 6/Main Street intersection. 

Work is currently paused while Verizon completes relocation of underground duct banks. Drainage construction will resume once that work is finished. Verizon’s relocation efforts remain ongoing. The construction progress is approximately 36% complete. 

Route 6 Resurfacing and Related Work (Wellfleet) 
Construction Cost: $15,181,230 | Project Start Date: December 2023 

This project includes drainage improvements, pavement milling, resurfacing, and restriping along Route 6 from the Eastham town line to Main Street in Wellfleet. Improvements also include buffered bike lanes, crosswalks, bus stop improvements, new pedestrian warning beacons, and a traffic signal upgrade at the Route 6 and Marconi Beach Road intersection. 

Current work includes grading sidewalks and shoulders for concrete pours. Signal crews are installing mast arms and signal heads at the Marconi Beach Road intersection. The construction progress is approximately 64% complete. 

Route 28 at Yarmouth Road (Barnstable) 
Construction Cost: $17,867,914 | Project Start Date: October 2021 

This intersection reconstruction project includes new approach turn lanes, a modern traffic signal system, upgraded rail gate signals at the crossing, a shared-use path on the west side of Route 28, a crossing connecting to Engine House Road, and new sidewalks on all remaining quadrants. 

Eversource, Comcast, and Verizon are currently completing utility relocations. The contractor is installing granite curbing for the splitter island at Yarmouth Road. Intersection reconstruction is anticipated to begin on November 20, 2025, with all construction occurring at night. 

Bearses Way Shared-Use Path (Barnstable) 
Construction Cost: $4,034,933 | Project Start Date: December 2023 

This project constructs a new 0.72-mile shared-use path along Bearses Way, from Pitchers Way to the south driveway of the Town of Barnstable Department of Public Works. The project includes a 10-foot-wide path on the west side of the roadway, drainage upgrades, and ADA-compliant ramps and crosswalks at Pitchers Way and Enterprise Road. Pedestrian signals will be installed at the existing traffic signal at Enterprise Road. 

The shared-use path has been recently paved. The contractor is installing a new water main, conducting pressure and bacteria testing, installing pedestrian curb ramps and signals at Enterprise Road, and performing full-depth paving of sewer trenches. Third-party utility work is complete. 

Cape Cod Rail Trail Extension (Yarmouth/Barnstable) 
Construction Cost: $16,391,305 | Project Start Date: December 2024 

This project extends the Cape Cod Rail Trail from its current terminus at Peter Homer Park in Yarmouth to Mary Dunn Road in Hyannis. Key features include a new bridge over Willow Street, three trailhead parking areas, and crossing improvements with warning beacons. 

Sections of the path have been paved, and crews are raking topsoil and hydroseeding along the shared-use path corridor. The construction progress is approximately 25% complete. 

Bass River Bridge Reconstruction and Route 28/North Main Street Intersection (Dennis/Yarmouth)
Construction Cost: $64,706,362 | Project Start Date: March 2025 

This project includes the replacement of the Bass River Bridge and advances multimodal improvements along Route 28, including safety and traffic signal upgrades at the Route 28/North Main Street intersection in Yarmouth. The project also includes a new municipal parking lot and installation of a pedestrian hybrid beacon in Dennis. 

The contractor has submitted alternative phasing, means and methods, pre-construction survey materials, and seismic monitoring plans to MassDOT and is awaiting review and approval. Contractor is mobilizing for anticipated drainage and water work. No major construction activities have been performed to date. 

Route 28 Sidewalk Installation (Harwich) 
Construction Cost: $2,572,850 | Project Start Date: November 2024 

This project will install a six-foot sidewalk along the south side of Route 28 between Bank Street and Saquatucket Harbor, including a boardwalk over an existing culvert. The area for the sidewalk has been cleared and graded. 

Construction progress is approximately 41% complete. The contractor is waiting for Verizon and Eversource to complete required utility relocation.  

Route 6 Resurfacing and Related Work (Bourne/Sandwich) 
Construction Cost: $7,642,386 | Project Start Date: June 2025 

This project includes pavement milling, resurfacing, restriping, and drainage improvements along Route 6 in Bourne and Sandwich. No major construction activities have been performed to date. The contractor has begun preparing the site and will be commencing work on adjusting and rebuilding existing drainage structures.
