Overview

"Pavement management" is the practice of planning for pavement repairs and maintenance to maximize the value and life of a pavement network.

The Commission issues a status report on pavement condition on Cape Cod each year. The collected data are modeled and analyzed to provide an objective rating of pavement conditions and needs. The annual assessments contribute to the implementation of a regional pavement management system for Cape Cod that keeps the roadway system in the best possible condition with the most efficient use of available funds.

Pavement Condition Viewer
The map shows the most recent pavement condition data collected by Cape Cod Commission staff from 2022 to 2024 on municipal, federal-aid-eligible roadways on Cape Cod.  The Cape Cod Commission pavement condition data is collected via windshield surveys.  During the windshield surveys, pavement conditions are collected based on various pavement criteria and observed pavement distresses.

Unpaved Roadway Inventory & Dashboard
Commission conducted an Unpaved Roadway Inventory to understand the location and ownership of the region’s unpaved (dirt/gravel) roads. Using planimetrics data, town data, the MassDOT Roadway Inventory, and local knowledge, Commission staff developed an online viewer to display the road surface type, and ownership (public vs. private) of the roadways across Cape Cod.
