Land-based Wind Energy

The Cape Cod Commission and the Cape Light Compact, agency departments administered by Barnstable County, secured a grant from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) as part of the Community Planning and Development Solicitation program to assist communities on Cape Cod in planning for land-based distributed-generation facilities, specifically land-based wind turbine development. The Commission and the Compact developed the project throughout 2004 and completed it in 2005.

The scope of the grant included three parts:

  1. creation of a "suitability map" that aims to identify areas suitable for locating distributed wind-energy facilities in Barnstable County;
  2. an assessment of distributed wind-energy technologies to establish their scale, application and potential impacts; and
  3. development of a model bylaw to provide a framework for towns in creating local regulations to accommodate uses of this kind and to provide a tool to understand this complex technology.

The Assessment of Distributed Generation Technology was completed in June 2004.

The suitability map (divided into four sub-regions of Cape Cod) and model bylaw were completed in January 2005 and are available in PDF format.
