Cape Cod Pond and Lake Atlas, Final Report (May 2003) - This atlas was a status report on the Pond and Lake Stewardship (PALS) program. It documented the outreach and education activities that led to the creation of the PALS program, reviews water-quality data collected by volunteers from over 190 ponds, used this data to develop Cape Cod-specific indicators of pond impacts, reviewed data collected in previous studies, and detailed further efforts necessary to move pond protection and remediation forward on the Cape. (290 pages)
Physical Hydrology of Selected Vernal Pools and Kettle Hole Ponds in the Cape Cod National Seashore, Massachusetts: Groundwater and Surface Water Interactions (April 2003) - Commission staff, in conjunction with the Cape Cod National Seashore, produced a report detailing relationships between groundwater and surface water level fluctuations in a number of Outer Cape vernal pools and ponds.
Surface Water Nutrient Management Project (June 2002) - Using a grant from the state Department of Environmental Protection, Commission staff developed nitrogen loading assessments and nitrogen management strategies for the watersheds and subwatersheds of Red Brook Harbor and Barnstable Harbor and coordinated, in conjunction with the towns of Harwich and Brewster, the development of a Long Pond management plan. This effort is based on the previously completed Long Pond Water Quality Assessment Project.
Coastal Nitrogen Loading Project (April 2002) - Using a grant from the state Department of Environmental Protection, Commission staff developed nitrogen loading assessments and nitrogen management strategies for the watersheds and subwatersheds of Centerville River/East Bay, Nauset Marsh/Town Cove, and the Herring River in Harwich and refined nitrogen loading for Popponesset Bay in Mashpee and Barnstable.
Title 5 Training Video - Coastal Embayments (June 2001) - Using a grant from the state Department of Environmental Protection, Commission staff developed a video explaining the concerns associated with impacts of wastewater disposal on coastal water quality. Experts from UMASS-Dartmouth's Center for Marine Science and Technology, the Buzzards Bay Project, the Association to Preserve Cape Cod, the towns of Barnstable and Chatham assisted in the development of the video.
Long Pond Water Quality Assessment Project (1999) - Project Overview
Pleasant Bay Nitrogen Loading Study (1998) - Working with the Pleasant Bay Alliance Steering Committee and Technical Advisory Committee, Commission staff developed subwatersheds and associated nitrogen loading analyses for subembayments to the bay. This work has been subsequently utilized in comprehensive wastewater planning in Chatham, a water quality sampling program for the bay, and other discussions for management of this regional resource.
Lake Wequaquet Water Level Study (1998) - Working with the Town of Barnstable Conservation Commission and Department of Public Works, Commission staff evaluated water level fluctuations and watershed delineations for Lake Wequaquet and Long Pond.
Cape Cod Coastal Embayment Project (1998) - Executive Summary and Project Overview
Priority Land Acquisition Assessment Project (PLAAP) (final report March 2001) - Using a grant from the state Department of Environmental Protection, Commission staff developed a series of maps for each of the Cape towns. These maps showed individual parcels grouped according to their potential for locating future water supply wells, which should also be of interest to local Land Bank committees. Another PLAAP project product is the reworking of previously produced Sagamore Lens and Monomoy Lens educational maps; this effort is based on a previous USGS effort.Sagamore Lens Project (1996) - The Commission initiated and drafted a regionally consistent groundwater protection policy for the Massachusetts Military Reservation. A nitrogen loading capacity assessment was completed for the public water supply areas in the town of Sandwich and an educational groundwater poster highlighting land use in the towns of Bourne, Falmouth, Mashpee, Sandwich, Barnstable, and Yarmouth was produced.
Identifying Potential Water Supply Areas (1994) - Working with the Commission, the US Geological Survey developed a methodology to identify potential water supply areas across Cape Cod and prepared a large regional color map of the results (USGS Water Resources Investigations Report 94-4156). The map encouraged water supply exploration and protection activities around the Cape and is now being used as a basis for state regulations on potential water source areas.
November 2006 Conference Presentations: Restoring and Protecting Coastal Waters - More than 150 local, regional, and state policy makers, scientists, and resource managers attended a conference in November 2006 to discuss local and regional efforts to implement Total Maximum Daily Loads and future coastal water quality issues for Cape Cod. Nine presenters reviewed topics using PowerPoint slides; the presentations are available here as PDF files.
Enhancing Wastewater Management on Cape Cod: Planning, Administrative, and Legal Tools (released July 2004) - Barnstable County and its former Wastewater Implementation Committee (WIC) funded an analysis of planning, administrative, and legal tools to improve wastewater management on Cape Cod. The study was conducted by a WIC working group, led by Wright-Pierce and subconsultants Teal Ltd. and CLF Ventures, with town, county, and Cape Cod Commission staff. First, an inventory was developed of existing wastewater infrastructure, and current regulatory programs were evaluated. In the second phase, the working group identified those aspects of current programs and policies that are hurdles to more effective management. Next, the group identified specific enhancements to existing programs and proposed new programs to supplement them. In the fourth phase, those existing and potential tools were applied to four towns as case studies. Through the case studies, several important tools were fine-tuned and further developed to be available to other towns. See the Enhancing Wastewater Management on Cape Cod: Planning, Administrative, and Legal Tools report as PDF file(s).
Cape Cod Comprehensive Regional Wastewater Management Strategy Development Project (final report June 2003) - Under an Executive Office of Environmental Affairs grant the Commission provided a regional strategy to help Cape Cod towns with wastewater management planning by establishing the Wastewater Implementation Committee (WIC) as an advisory committee to Barnstable County. The WIC served as a regional forum for sharing information on wastewater issues and coordinating town, state, and county wastewater programs. This report provided a regional assessment of wastewater planning and land use analysis to help Cape Cod towns collectively seek effective solutions for common wastewater problems. See the Cape Cod Comprehensive Regional Wastewater Management Strategy Development Project final report as a PDF file (3.3MB).
