In spring 2006, the Barnstable County Commissioners appointed the 21st Century Task Force on the Cape Cod Commission to evaluate the Commission's operations and make recommendations to improve the agency's effectiveness and relationships with towns. The Task Force met for about six months and conducted a thorough review of the Commission's planning, regulatory, and technical assistance functions.

In December 2006, the Task Force delivered its final report with more than 35 recommendations for improvements (see Task Force Report to Barnstable County Commissioners, December 2006).

In early 2007, representatives of the Cape Cod Commission met with the Barnstable County Commissioners to share their thoughts on how the Commission can proceed with an implementation plan for Task Force recommendations (see Overview of CCC Response, by CCC Executive Director, March 2007). They also met with the Barnstable County Assembly of Delegates and many Cape Cod town boards and civic groups to gain their perspectives.

The County Commissioners identified their own priorities in late April (see County Commissioners Statement, April 2007).

Activities were completed in December 2009.
