June 26 to July 3, 2010
BARNSTABLE COUNTY, MA -- The Barnstable County Commissioners have designated the last week of June as Cape Cod Smart Transportation Week.
The Cape Cod Commission and the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA) are partnering to coordinate events and activities that highlight smart transportation by promoting the use of transportation alternatives, such as accessing public transit, aviation, ferries, biking, walking, and more, from June 26 to July 3, 2010.
Environmentally, Cape Cod is an area seeking to reduce congestion, carbon footprints, and greenhouse gas emissions. Planners of Smart Transportation Week believe that by showcasing and using transportation alternatives, the environment will become healthier.
"An increased need and opportunity for smart transportation on the Cape begins at the end of June," said Senior Transportation Engineer Lev Malakhoff, one of the organizers of Smart Transportation Week. "Our summer visitors are beginning to arrive at a time when we have beautiful weather for biking and walking, and the CCRTA bus services are operating under extended schedules. It's a great time to kick-off a summer of traveling smarter."
This year, the CCRTA is taking on an expanded role in planning activities for Smart Transportation Week. In addition to providing improved timely and efficient services, as well as integrating technology into all facets of the system, the CCRTA has brought together its transportation partners to improve multi-modal coordination.
CCRTA Administrator Thomas S. Cahir said, "The CCRTA is a part of the overall solution for improving transportation on the Cape, and we welcome the opportunity to help coordinate with our partner organizations to make Smart Transportation Week a success, while working diligently to continue to improve transportation on Cape Cod year-round."
