Town of Yarmouth: Rascal Property

Rascal PropertyThe Town of Yarmouth has, like other towns, been active in acquiring open space properties for years. The first purchase made with Land Bank funds was a 2.59-acre parcel of land located on Route 28 in a heavily developed area of town.

Mr. Jack Mulkeen, chair of the Yarmouth Land Bank Committee, gave a bit of history on the area. He recalls the property as being overgrown. The small brook that forms the boundary on one side of the parcel was loaded with trash and piles of creosote-soaked timbers lay wasting away at the rear of the lot. Back in the sixties, the property was mostly marsh and was filled in by the previous owner.

Rascal PropertyPlans for the parcel along Route 28 include a park with a small parking lot, a picnic area, and handicapped-accessible viewing platform overlooking the marsh.

Mr. Mulkeen's motivating words of wisdom to other communities interested in community preservation are: "You have to want to give something back. There is no one reason; it's just the right thing to do."
