The Town of Eastham has, like many other towns on the Cape, been in the business of purchasing land for open space long before the Land Bank monies were made available. Although no parcels have been purchased since 1990, the committee is still very active in searching out available properties in their town.
Toni Stoker, former chair of the Eastham Land Acquisition Committee, explained a little of the history behind the last purchase made by the Committee:
Cottontail Acres received its name from an elementary school student who submitted the name in a contest held to name the property. After the death of the original owner, the family members who inherited the land found that the taxes on the property were just too much to handle. A deal was struck with the town in which they received about 19 acres of the property. With beautiful walking trails and vegetation, the property has a magnificent overlook of Herring Pond. Ms. Stoker said, "By making the public aware of what you are doing and getting them on board, life is much easier."
The Town of Eastham is currently looking into other properties and are hoping to purchase again in the near future.
