The Commission has embarked on an initiative to help Cape Cod residents and policy makers understand the science and geography of a watershed-based approach to wastewater management planning.
The goals are to work with stakeholders and citizens on the regional, shared scope of watershed issues, and to encourage public discourse on cost-effective and appropriate wastewater treatment solutions for Barnstable County.
The Cape Cod Commission is collaborating with local communities and regional, state, and federal governmental partners to prepare comprehensive studies that will identify ways to improve traffic safety and congestion in the areas of regional rotaries ("traffic circles").
Two ongoing, significant efforts are focusing on the Airport Rotary in Hyannis and the Bourne Rotary in the Cape Cod Canal area.
The Cape Cod Commission and Cape Cod Economic Development Council have established a flexible, multidisciplinary planning and technical assistance staff team known as RESET, short for Regional Economic Strategy Executive Team. A product of the Cape Cod Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) implementation initiative in 2009, the partnership brings together varied staff to work in an intensive process with Cape communities.
Jointly the team and host towns identify any impediments to development and redevelopment as well as any opportunities for growth in areas so designated on the Regional Land Use Vision Map. The team evaluates such issues as land use, business potential, desired streetscape improvements, recommendations for re-zoning and re-use of key properties in the targeted area, all to help stimulate balanced and sustainable economic development.
Recognizing that diminishing local resources required pursuit of efficiencies offered through technology and shared solutions, in 2012 the Barnstable County Board of Regional Commissioners directed the Cape Cod Commission to create the Strategic Information Office.
It was part of a broader strategy by County agencies to develop technology infrastructure projects on behalf of the 15 towns.
The Cape Cod Commission, in conjunction with the Cape Cod National Seashore, is working with the towns of Wellfleet, Truro, and Provincetown to develop a master plan for creating an interconnected bicycle and pedestrian facility network linking the towns with the Seashore, the Cape Cod Rail Trail, and other destinations within the three Outer Cape communities. The Master Plan seeks to enhance and expand recreational and transportation opportunities on the Outer Cape, addressing the needs of all levels of bicyclists and pedestrians. It will establish a comprehensive long-term vision and direction for developing bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure in the region. The planning process will include extensive opportunities for public participation.
