Technical Assistance

The Cape Cod Commission has an Historic Preservation Specialist and Planning staff who provide technical assistance on a wide variety of preservation projects to town boards and officials, non-profit organizations, neighborhood groups, and individuals. Some of the work Commission staff does to support historic preservation efforts is listed below:
- Conducts training programs for historical commissions and historic district commissions on preservation standards and review procedures.
- Evaluates the architectural and historic significance of un-inventoried historic properties for town officials and historic review boards.
- Helps to develop and review bylaws, regulations, and design guidelines to protect historic areas and archaeologically sensitive lands.
- Gives lectures and PowerPoint presentations on the history of Cape Cod architecture and related topics to increase knowledge of the region's historic resources and preservation efforts.
- Coordinates CPA Roundtable meetings to discuss preservation issues related to the Community Preservation Act (CPA) and its funding of historic preservation efforts.
- Advises town boards, historical commissions, historic district commissions, community preservation committees, and non-profit organizations on specific historic rehabilitation proposals and their consistency with the Secretary's Standards for Treatment of Historic Properties.
- Maintains a demolition delay network to help advertise historic buildings threatened with demolition, and advises historical commissions on ways to avoid demolition of historic properties.
- Assists in writing grants for historic rehabilitation work, historic resource inventories, and preservation education efforts.
- Develops special projects to protect threatened historic and cultural resources.
