CCC Coastal and Marine Resources

Program Management

Updated August 29, 2006

Achieving the goals identified in the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) depends on regionally based implementation of CCMP actions while recognizing each community's priorities, interests, and its capacity for locally driven environmental protection. The Cape's Barnstable County Coastal Resource Committee (CRC) periodically hosts public forums with invited speakers who provide presentations on issues of special concern, and discusses the implications of management practices and policies for the Cape's coastal environment.

The Commission's Marine Resources Specialist also analyzes potential impacts to coastal resources from developments undergoing review as Developments of Regional Impact for Barnstable County, or projects that are under review by the Commonwealth under the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA). The Commission's Marine Resources Specialist evaluates the likely effects of these projects for consistency with the Regional Policy Plan and recommend strategies to minimize adverse impacts.

The Commission's Marine Resources Specialist also works to facilitate municipal planning efforts to deal with coastal issues such as increasing development pressure, erosion of the shoreline and vulnerability of flood hazard areas, and stewardship for resources held in public trust. The Marine Resources Specialist tracks broader issues as well, and attends regional meetings such as New England Fishery Management Council hearings. This position monitors issues in the fishing industry and their bearing on local fishers, fishery stocks, and other aspects of the marine environment.
